Puppy Training Techniques - Teaching The Command to Stay
There are a lot of puppy training techniques out there. Every body has their own technique to train dogs, the technique that I like to use in training the command to stay is explained in this article. To start, you would have to already taught you dog the command to sit or down. The command to stay is a extension on the sit or down command. An the reason for this is that the sit or down command is not worth much if your dog gets into one of these positions and then gets right back up.
So let get started with the puppy training techniques that I use. When you start training the stay command, the are should be free of any distractions. You should not start with a long training session, these first few lessons should only last a few minutes. Lets get started by putting your puppy into the position that you are going to teach your dog to stay in, sit, stand, or down. You want to stand in front of your puppy after you given the command to sit or the one your working with. Your dog should stay in this position for a few seconds before they move, if he or she does this give them praise and maybe a treat. Just take it slowly and try to keep adding time that they stay in that position. Work with this part of the training for a week or two or until you think they have it down pat.
The next step in teaching the command to stay is to add a verbal command and hand signal to what you have all ready been doing. Now stand in front of your dog and place him or her in their position and just say stay and at this time place your hand in front of you with your palm at your dogs nose. After a few seconds you can release them and give them praise and a reward for a great job.You can now repeat this training over and over and extend the time that you keep your dog in this position.
Another thing to do is practice the stay command throughout the day. When you need to do something like run outside or go to the basement, have your dog sit stay why you do what you need to do and when you return release them. This just reinforces the stay command even when your not in contact with your dog.
